Youth Services Committee

Youth-Leadership @EscanabaKiwanis.org

Mission – to support programs involving youth 6 through 18 years of age through funding and service hours in programs such as:

  • Hockey and Baseball Team sponsorship
  • YMCA Swim Programs and Scholarship Campaign
  • YAP Youth Assistance Program
  • Special youth programs in schools and community
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters
  • Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
  • Newspapers in Education
  • Bay Cliff Health Camp
  • Programs for children with special needs
  • Summer Camp Programs
  • BUG program (Bringing up Grades)
    • A Kiwanis International Program to build self esteem and a sense of accomplishment by encouraging elementary students to do their best to bring up their grades through a system of awards – these are usually students not able to achieve the A or B Honor Roll
  • YLW (Youth Leadership Workshops for Hi School Sophomores)
    • An opportunity to work with the local school districts in the county to conduct a community leadership workshop for High School Sophomores utilizing community people to interact and to present activities and topics that build and encourage leadership qualities.
    • Suggested Procedure:
      • Committee chair sets date of workshop
      • Confirm facility and food services
      • Contact School Principals re student invitations in Jan. and Aug.
      • Set agenda/schedule for the day
      • Set Program/Presenters
      • Recruit Junior counselors who have made a YLW (Key Club)
      • Arrange for promotional items, T-shirts etc.
      • Arrange for group School pictures which can be sent later
      • Recruit club members for the day if necessary
      • Assign club members to interact with chaperones/counselors
      • Provide Sponsored Clubs literature for visitors
  • Develop new programs/services as needed, using Kiwanis International Literature

Youth Leadership Workshop Subcommittee

Mission – to work with the local School Districts in the County to conduct a Youth Leadership Workshop for High School Sophomores. Community leaders are used to interact and present activities and topics that build and encourage leadership qualities. Subcommittee activities include:

  • Confirmation of Workshop Dates
  • Recruiting Counselors
  • Confirmation of Facility and Food Services
  • Arranging for Promotional Items
  • Contacting School Principals
  • Publicity including Kiwanis Literature for Chaperones & Counselors
  • Setting Agendas & Schedule
  • Providing Sponsored Clubs Literature to Attendees
  • Setting Program & Presenters

Sponsored Youth/Programs Committee

Mission – to provide a Support System for Youth, Elementary through College age and also for Adults with Developmental Disabilities. It is an effort to provide youth as well as adults with developmental disabilities with an alternative use of their time, promote a desire for Community service and to encourage and build leadership skills. Kiwanis International Literature is available as to procedures to follow.

  • Holy Name School Junior High Builders Club

  • Arrange transportation of Sponsored Youth to our weekly meeting
  • Act as Hosts/Hostesses for Sponsored Youth guests at our meeting

  • Encourage members to attend Sponsored Clubs meetings
  • Organize periodic Inter-club with Sponsored Clubs
  • Identify projects K clubs can work on together
  • Help plan K family gatherings

Aktion Club Committee (subcommittee of Sponsored Programs)

Mission – A committee from Sponsored Programs that develops and supports a community service group composed of adults with developmental disabilities. It provides an opportunity for people to develop leadership skills and to perform community service. Aktion concentrates on the abilities of people not the disability.

  • Committee members serve as Advisors to Aktion Club
  • Advisors give direction on conducting meetings
  • Advisors arrange programs for Aktion Club meetings
  • Set up a rotation with other K clubs for serving as advisors
  • Partner with Lake States Industries for technical assistance
  • Identify service projects and fund raisers
  • Arrange Kiwanis supervision of Aktion Members
  • Communicate with member’s care givers
  • Communicate with participating Kiwanis Clubs
  • Arrange periodic meetings of Advisors to evaluate performance
  • Recruit new Aktion members and Advisors

Young Children Priority One Committee

Mission – to provide funds and service hours to programs involving Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers through age 5 years. More examples in Kiwanis Literature:

  • Support “Parenting the First Year” newsletter
  • Support Welcome Newborns Program with MSU Extension, The Community Foundation and others
  • Raise funds for any Worldwide Service Project
  • Reading is Fundamental Program with the Head Start Early Childhood Program
  • Read to Head Start students
  • Develop new programs/services as needed for children ages 0 thru 5 using Kiwanis International Literature

Human & Spiritual Values Committee

Mission – To foster human and spiritual values among members and in the community through projects such as:

  • Invocators at City Council meetings when asked
  • Arrange a Directory of Community Churches
  • Clergy Appreciation Day
  • Christmas Bell ringing for the Salvation Army
  • Christmas Caroling
  • Spiritual comments using the Kiwanis Objectives for weekly meetings and newsletter
  • Develop new programs/services, use K International literature & Objectives

Community Services Committee

Mission – To support financially and as volunteers, community projects and events that will be a benefit to the entire community. There are sub committees for special events such as Special Olympics, Home and Garden/Pancake Days that can include more than Community Service Committee members. Kiwanis International Literature is available for this committee.

  • Highway clean-up – April, July, October
  • United Way
  • Bonifas Art Center
  • Delta County Historical Society
  • Annual recognition of Veteran’s Day
  • Walk for Warmth
  • Support Red Cross efforts
  • Support Cultural activities in the Community
  • Support safety education & crime prevention programs
  • Support Alliance against Violence and Abuse
  • Support programs for adults with developmental disabilities eg. CHAT Halloween party, donation to organization

Home and Garden Show/Pancake Days Committee

Mission – The major fund raiser for Escanaba Kiwanis which is usually held in April. The total membership is called on to help with this event. The committee arranges for:

  • Set Event dates with UP State Fairgrounds Staff
  • Vendors
  • Placemat sponsors
  • Pancake tickets
  • Food and Beverages
  • Recruiting K Family for set up, cooking, tear down etc.
  • Publicity – highly utilized as a public relations/awareness event
  • Provide a first-rate vehicle for home and garden type interests

Special Olympics Committee (subcommittee of Community Services)

Mission – A committee from Community Service which organizes an annual Upper Peninsula Basketball Tournament. Winning Teams are eligible to participate in the State Special Olympics games.

  • Partner with the Delta-Schoolcraft Special Olympic Coordinator who takes care of communication with teams, athletes, makes up game brackets etc.
  • Kiwanis Organization of tournament Days
  • Food – Friday supper, Saturday lunch
  • Opening Ceremonies – M.C, Parade of athletes, Invocator, Dignitaries, etc.
  • Score and time keepers recruited from Kiwanis, Key & Builders clubs
  • Entertainment eg. Band, Videos etc.
  • Concession Stand – K adult with various youth groups
  • Recruit K family and club members
  • Recruit Referee and Medical Coordinators from the community
  • Arrange for publicity

Public Relations & Kiosk Committee

Mission – To raise the level of awareness in the community to the Escanaba Noon Kiwanis Club and to educate/inform members of our club and Kiwanis International activities.

  • Provide news releases, pictures etc.to local media
  • Assist other committees with PR for their projects
  • Publish a monthly newsletter when possible
  • Recognize member accomplishments and awards in the media and Kiwanews
  • Maintain, and update Kiosk of Community leaders/events

Mission – The primary focus of this committee is to attract new members and to retain current members.

  • Conduct Induction Ceremonies
  • Provide guests with information about Kiwanis
  • Make literature and membership applications available
  • Meet with prospective members to explain the responsibilities and privileges of Kiwanis membership
  • Monitor the progress (with the Sponsor) of each new member
  • Identify and contact members who are absent without notice
  • Maintain the Club history

Mission – Arranges and encourages members to attend an Inter-club with Sponsored programs and other K Clubs in the Division.

  • Visits all clubs in Division 24 for Round Robin Award

Past Presidents Committee

Mission – To serve as an advisory group for the Board and club members. The chair of this committee is the Immediate Past President who calls the group together for meetings. If he/she does not, another past president can call for a meeting.

  • The nominating committee for officers and board members
  • Make special event arrangements eg. Governor’s visit, club birthday, Christmas party or other recognition days
  • Review and recommend changes to the Club by-laws
  • Advise the Board on liability or other insurance
  • Designate a past president as liaison to the Board annually
